One By One is a family governed arrangement, which was founded in 2000. It aims to support up to 10 individuals with disabilities to create their own vision for the future based on each person's unique talents, interests and abilities within the community. One By One not only aims to enrich the lives of their sons or daughters but to introduce into the community people of warmth, humor, passion and talent.
One By One has come to understand the importance of presenting a positive image, developing strong and valued roles within the community, entering into mutual relationships with others and contributing to the community in meaningful ways. One By One's emphasis is on natural relationships over formal ones. These values provide the general direction in which the vision and specific goals around each individual are set. While One By One as a Governance Group meets regularly to decide on issues of vision funding and other administrative matters, the main control and decision-making power resides with each individual and their family. Melba Support Services acts as a host agency and administrative vehicle in relation to receiving funds from the Department of Human Services and dealing with employment matters on behalf of each individual. The family, as part of the individuals support circle is responsible together with their son or daughter for deciding how the funds will be spent. Supports are designed around a specific individual to assist them to achieve their dreams and aspirations. Support Workers are employed, as necessary, to work for one person and to receive direction from each individual and their family.
One By One also provides some concrete assistance (other than funding) to the individuals and their families through the Coordinator. |
