Please find attached on this page some documents that have been collated by families and individuals in One by One about what makes a good support person, as well as a brief position description of the support persons role. 

What makes a good support person?? 

ü      Genuine respect, understanding, concern & consideration for the person and their wants, needs & capabilities

ü      Sensitivity, trust, honesty, openness

ü      Getting to know people well but also knowing that there is much about each person still to be discovered

ü      Believing in, encouraging & facilitating genuine community inclusion & typical lifestyles

ü      Understanding the importance of the role that family & friends play in any person’s life and facilitating this

ü      Listening to what’s said & unsaid and responding accordingly

ü      Respecting diversity, difference and wishes

ü      Respect for other people’s routines & rituals

ü      Imagination, flexibility, creativity and being open to change

ü      Attention to detail

ü      Know we all have good & bad days, it’s just part of life!

ü      Willingness to do what it takes, and even more!

ü      Seeing their role as more than a job

ü      Believing that anything is possible

ü      Having initiative & common sense

ü      Respect for one’s privacy (realising what is one’s own business)

ü      Knowing that there is nothing “standardized” about life

ü      Pushing the boundaries

POSITION DESCRIPTION: INDIVIDUAL/COMMUNITY SUPPORT PERSON

 Those people employed by the project need to be committed to working in a model of service that is guided and directed by those who use it. 

Background 

The One By One Project was founded by families who wanted to create their own vision for their sons and daughters based on each individuals unique talents and abilities. The founding philosophies include: All people are unique, one person at a time, having influence over one’s funding, community inclusion, the importance of family and creating “right” relationship.  Families and individuals have the authority to create their own vision and choose their own support requirements.  Melba Support Services acts as a “hosting” agency or “fiscal intermediary” so that each person and their family can design and have influence over their own vision for the future within their particular funding allocation while not being burdened with fiscal and other tedious management requirements.  The project is small and is governed by the people who use it i.e. families and people who have a disability. 

PRIMARY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY/QUALITIES SOUGHT

 q       Ability to help create, and to take action on the visions of people who have a disability.

q       To assist to create lifestyles that are;

q       Individually relevant

q       Include work, education, recreation, health

q       In the local community

q       Help individuals build relationships in their local community.

q       Genuine commitment and ability to focus on each person as an individual

q       Ability to understand that there is no pre defined ‘program’ or way of doing things and thus each person has the ability to guide their own arrangement

q       To find quality options in the community based on each person’s unique aspirations and abilities

q       Demonstration of sound ethics & personal qualities such as;

q       Trust, reliability, openness, honesty, respect, compassion, punctuality

q       Ability to feel compassionate about another person’s circumstance  

q       Creativity

q       A willingness to “look outside” the prescribed/traditional boundaries in the search of a better life for people who have a disability 

q       Capacity to be constructive & persistent

q       Good communication and problem solving skills

q       Constant sharing of feedback in regard to each person’s progress

q       Ability to support people physically, socially, emotionally and spiritually (may include some personal care) 

Hours Of Work

 Are based on the individual needs of the person being supported and may include weekday, evenings and some weekend work. Flexibility is essential.  Hours will be negotiated with each individual family. 

Award

 Remuneration in line with the Residential and Support Worker’s Award 

Salary

 Grade 1 to Grade 4: Year 1 to 3 (dependent upon qualifications and/or experience). Reimbursement for mileage based on engine capacity when supporting people to pursue options within the community 

Responsible To

 Directly responsible to the person with a disability and/or their family in conjunction with the One By One Project Coordinator, One By One Governance Committee, Director  of Disability Services (Melba Support Services) 

Other Requirements

 q       Current Victorian Driver’s license together with a willingness to use one’s own vehicle and have comprehensive car insurance 

q       A current Level 1 First Aid Certificate may be required in individual cases. 

q       Certificate IV in Community Services (Disability) or an equivalent preferred but not essential 

q       Provide a current Victorian Police Check (upon application approval)
